FedRAMP published Consolidated Rules for 2026 covering 20x and Rev5 certification paths. The old JAB-versus-agency summary is insufficient for a new project.
Confirm the path, class and transition dates with the program and federal customer. Ask vendors to show evidence exports for that scope. Mapping NIST controls does not automatically provide a program certification or agency authorization.

Cloud providers evaluating an in-scope use by a US federal agency. Confirm the service boundary, certification path and agency requirements before selecting a platform.
FedRAMP addresses security assurance for cloud services used by the US federal government. Establish whether the particular service and intended agency use are in scope before setting a project budget. The customer, assessor and compliance platform have different roles.
The 2026 guidance describes Program Certification, generally associated with 20x, and Agency Certification for Rev5. Limited Rev5 program pathways also exist. Eligibility and transition dates matter; the former JAB-versus-agency distinction is not a complete description of a new project.
Consult the official pathway and timeline sources above for the rules applicable to your service. A marketplace listing, program certification and an agency decision to use the service are different milestones.
Our recommended first deliverable is a service-boundary worksheet. Identify the product, customer use, data flows, environments, dependencies and operational owners. Record which controls you operate and which depend on another provider. Ask the responsible agency and assessor to review unresolved assumptions before purchasing software around them.
Use a representative change or vulnerability as a test case. Ask the vendor to demonstrate the finding, owner, remediation, approval, retained evidence and export. Check how recurring work is scheduled and what changes when a component enters or leaves the boundary.
Software may organize controls and evidence. It does not replace assessment requirements or the responsible agency's decisions.
Request separate estimates for licensing, assessment work, engineering remediation, documentation and continuing operations. Quote the same boundary and path to each supplier. We do not have a verified universal cost or completion time for this scope; a headline estimate would conceal the largest project assumptions.
